ABBOTSFORD PLANS ITS NEXT CENTURY

BY GORDON HAUSER

n 1899, Abbotsford had its program worked out to take it into the 20th Century. Today, we have an appealing program of activities for Ottawans 55 years or older for year 2000.

Abbotsford stood proudly on Bank Street before there was any Lansdowne Park across the road and, had you been there and looked to the south, all you would see was countryside.

If this peaks your interest, feel free to drop into this historic building to see the changes that have been made and to experience the aura of continuity of life flowing on, of generations of people sharing.

Abbotsford is your Senior Centre and everything that is done here is designed with your interests in mind. Since we have been doing it right for many years, we claim some expertise.

You can plan your involvement by perusing our free winter Program Guide. Call 230-5730 to ensure you get yours, there still is plenty of time to consider what you want to do, for the wide range of activities get under way the week of January 17. Because the January issue of this paper may be out after the 17 you will need to enroll before then.

Exercise in a warm social atmosphere with instructors who know what you can and can't do. As a senior you owe it to yourself to stay healthy. Before then there will time forfestivities.

We recognize that partying is not for everyone and some in our community experience isolation and loneliness. Abbotsford has its effective Seniors Outreach Service. Sandy and Elizabeth run it. Want to know more? Phone the number above.

Let me explain. Trained respite workers are available to assist clients during illness or after early hospital release. Supervision and support are offered by staff, as well as information and referral to services such as Homecare, Meals on Wheels and various social services.

Volunteer Friendly Visitors are matched with people that need a supportive relationship. Weekly visits may be a help. Drivers are available to escort people to medical and dental appointments. Home support workers are thoroughly screened and can be sent at your request to assist with housecleaning, homemaking, maintenance, yardwork and snow shovelling. If you know of a friend or family member in need please call the Seniors Outreach Office. That number again, 230-5730.

Once again, I have run out of space to tell you all the exciting things we do here at Abbotsford. Come in and get the tour. Or for breakfast or lunch, you don't need to book a table and while you sip your coffee, plan which fun activity you would enjoy being part of.
