YOUTH EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENT

n Wednesday January 19, Mayor Jim Watson presented nine outstanding young people with Certificates and Medals of Excellence at City Hall. One of these recipients was Old Ottawa South resident Alexander Wolkow.

Alexander Wolkow is a remarkable and courageous young man who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer two years ago. As he underwent several operations, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, Alexander never abandoned his passion for the Scouts movement.

This past November, Alexander was chosen to receive the Jack Cornwell Decoration Award at a Chief Scout's Investiture Ceremony, hosted by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson at Rideau Hall. This honor, bestowed on Alexander by his own 17th Southminister Scout Group, recognized his strength of character, tenacity and bravery. Alexander is a perfect example that, no matter what obstacles stand in your way, everything is possible if you just set your mind to it.
