MARGARET ATWOOD RECEIVES KEYS TO THE CITY

BY INEZ BERG

n September 20, Canadian author Margaret Atwood was presented with the keys to the City of Ottawa at the Glebe Community Centre.

The Centre was chosen for this honorary ceremony because Ms. Atwood was born in Ottawa and spent the very first years of her life at her family's home on First Avenue.

Speakers at the event were David Staines, Dean of Arts, University of Ottawa, and Ottawa author, Frances Itani. Following the presentation ofthe Keys to the City by Acting Mayor Higdon, I was honored to present Ms. Atwood with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of Capital Ward residents, many of whom attended.

The Corpus Christi School choir delighted Ms. Atwood and the audience with a lullaby, chosen for her by the choir, as they explained, "because she is a mother."

Afterward, many stayed to enjoy food and refreshments provided by The Pantry at the Glebe Community Centre.
