ver two hundred people turned out at Brewer Park on Sunday afternoon, October 1st for a Community Funday organized by the Carleton University Students' Association (CUSA) in cooperation with Ottawa Mayor Allan Higdon, the Ottawa South Community Association, the Rideau River Residence Association, and Carleton's United Way campaign.
The traditions upon which this event has grown began, years ago, as a Mayor's pizza party for students held each fall at the Firehall. Its object was to promote a sense a belonging and responsibility with local residents.
This year, Jay Nordenstrom, director of external affairs for CUSA got the idea to expand that tradition and have it become a charity"funday" involving local families, games for children, music, prizes and a barbeque.
"We at Carleton form a big part of the Old Ottawa South community," explained Jay. The purpose of this event, he went on, "is to promote ties between local families and Carleton University's residences and student organizations."
"As a partnership, the day was a huge success," according to Carleton's United Way campaign chair Diane Proulx. Hundreds of dollars were raised, the weather was perfect and everyone had fun. "What I like best," she explained, "was watching the big university boys and girls playing games with local children." "It warmed my heart," Diane confessed.
