ROADS ARE FOR MORE THAN TRAFFIC

A CITIZEN'S WORKSHOP

he Region of Ottawa-Carleton in collaboration with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Go for Green has just published design guidelines for arterial streetscapes, Regional Road Corridor Design Guidelines.

The Region is also exploring opportunities in encouraging alternative modes of travel in new developments and invites you to a workshop which will cross traditional boundaries between land use and transportation planning.

Roads can no longer be considered as predominantly traffic-carrying facilities moving vehicles and goods as efficiently and safely as possible. While this remains a primary objective, particularly for regional roads which have an arterial function, greater consideration needs to be given to the requirements of all travel modes and emphasising choices for walking, cycling and transit use.

Road designers and planners must consider the role of the entire roadcorridor as a public space, and the role of a road in shaping the character, function and liveability of adjacent land uses and communities. Site planners and development professionals must consider the impact of their projects on making alternative choices viable.

The session will begin with speakers on the new guidelines and on designing transit, cycling and pedestrian friendly developments. This will be followed with a break-out session where teams will analyse and negotiate a consensus for a design that enhances the alternatives to the automobile.

Attend this workshop October 18, 8:30am-12:30 in the Honeywell Room, Regional City Hall, 111 Lisgar Street and try your hand at designing roads and site/subdivision plans using real sites in your community to apply these principles.
