LOCAL AUTHOR TO READ AT WESTBORO ACADEMY

BY NANCY THUNEM

new academic year has begun for students at Westboro Academy, a private, coeducational, bilingual elementary school. We are pleased to be celebrating our second year in our beautiful location and building at Brewer Park.  It is an exciting time as the staff, Board of Directors and parents together work hard to provide a stimulating and enriching environment for our eager young minds.

Plans are underway for Westboro Academy's 3rd Annual Book Fair, to be held at the school Thursday, November 16, from 1-8 p. For the first time this year, Westboro Academy will open this Book Fair to the general public.

Building on last year's successful format, the 2000 Book Fair will include a large variety of quality books provided by two outstanding local book distributors. In keeping with the school's strong bilingual curriculum, books in both languages will be available, each book carefully selected by our distributors to represent quality material with a lot of Canadian content.

Nicholas Hoare Bookstore will be supplying us with English literature and references, while Coin du Livre, a long time and reputable supplier of French books, will bring in a wonderful assortment of French reading material from early readers to more advanced, technical references.

We are also very pleased to announce a special added feature for this year's Book Fair. Sylvia Helen Vincent, an award-winning local author, has been invited to do two readings. Ms. Vincent's stories have been described as modern Aesop's fables in which, using humorous animal characters, she gently conveys important messages to our childrenincluding respect, individuality, friendship and responsibility.

There will be readings from the Sera Books Collection from GWEV Publishing, which includes How Do Crocodiles Fly? and Roly Poly Prickly Hedgehog written by Sylvia Helen Vincent and Simon With Two Left Feet by Angela K. Narth.

At 1:15 pm, Sylvia Helen Vincent will read to the JK to Grade 2 classes. At 2:15 pm, she will change the format slightly for the older students and also discuss issues relating to writing, publishing, illustrating, etc.

Sylvia will also talk about GWEV Publishing's first annual Children's Literary Competition, which will be launched in the next few weeks. The general public is invited and encouraged to attend any of these readings.

As a special treat for the little ones this year, we will be running a plaster painting craft table in the foyer from 3:15-7:30 pm. Prices of thematic figures will vary from $1 to $3. Bring your Christmas lists and let your youngsters create original decorations for that special someone.

The general public, especially residents and children of Old Ottawa South, are invited to our very special millennium edition of Westboro Academy's Book Fair. Mark your calendars now. Feel free to stay a while, pick up a book or two and create a plaster masterpiece. We're looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, November 16, from 1-8 pm!
